A set of six Fenton TOPAZ pattern Stretch Vaseline Glass plates, circa 1916-1935. The Fenton Art Glass Company was founded in 1905 in Martins Ferry, Ohio, by brothers Frank and John Fenton. The manufacturer introduced their yellow Vaseline glass in 1916, and it became very popular in the 1920s through the 1930s. The glass is highly iridescent and glows under UV black light due to the uranium oxide content in the glass. Stretch Glass is iridized glass which has been pressed and molded by hand, then re-heated after the application of metallic sprays causing the iridescence. This process produces fine striations on the surface of the glass. The stretch effect is further enhanced by crimping the edges of the plates by hand. The plates are a gorgeous transparent yellow, the wide rim shows the hand crimped striations, making each piece unique. The plates are substantial, thick, and heavy. 9 in. in Diameter x .75 in. H. These are in wonderful condition.
